Leeds dealt potential Lewis O’Brien blow

Crystal Palace have reportedly hijacked Leeds United’s attempt to sign Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien this summer.

The Lowdown: Leeds linked with O’Brien move

The Whites have been linked with making a move for the 22-year-old numerous times in recent weeks, but no great progress has been made so far.

O’Brien has stood out as a key player for Huddersfield in the last few seasons, making 42 appearances in the Championship in 2020/21.

The Latest: Palace emerge as rivals

It looks as though Leeds may find it tricky to get their man, however, with Football Insider reporting from a Palace source that the Eagles are looking to seal a move for O’Brien instead.

It is stated that the Selhurst Park outfit have already signed Conor Gallagher on loan in front of the Whites and that they are now looking to inflict more misery on them.

New Palace manager Patrick Vieira wants to alter his midfield ahead of the new season and sees O’Brien as a strong candidate to come in.

The Verdict: Not the end of the world for Leeds

O’Brien is undoubtedly a good player who has enjoyed a big influence in the Championship, but it wouldn’t be considered a big blow if Leeds missed out on him.

It would still arguably be preferable to sign him, given his long-term potential and the lack of depth in central midfield, but an alternative target who is proven in a top-tier league may be a better option.

O’Brien is unlikely to be a regular starter if he does come in, so it wouldn’t have a big impact on the here and now at Elland Road.
